| # | Date | Event | Venue | Comment |
1/2/02 | Annie Liebovitz: Women | Seattle Art Museum | Wow. Definitely worth seeing. You get the sense that you know some of these women.
2/9/02 | The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring | Metro Cinema | Wowie. Sent me straight to the books I'd received for Christmas.
2/9/02 | Carmen: a Lesson in Love | Pacific Northwest Ballet (PNB) | Interesting multimedia adaptation, in which the story is told through a ballet company in rehearsal to put on a Carmen-like show.
2/10/02 | Jitney | Seattle Repertory Theatre | August Wilson "decade" play. Outstanding. They should do one every year.
2/22/02 | Galleries | Art Institute of Chicago | Cool Impressionist stuff.
3/2/02 | Cinderella | PNB | Better than I expected.
3/3/02 | The Last True Believer | Seattle Rep | Not great, but not bad.
3/9/02 | National Lacrosse League: Washington Power vs. Philadelphia Wings | Washington DC | My first professional lacrosse game, and my shot at seeing the Gait brothers play before Paul retires this summer. The Power won, and there were a lot of good fights and near-fights.
3/30/02 | Titus Andronicus | Intiman Theatre | Extremely well done. I don't think I ever read this, one of Shakespeare's early tragedies. Some of it is a little clumsy (Aaron the Moor seems to turn evil for evil's sake, and spends a lot of time talking about how evil he is, and if they didn't kill him, he'd just be more evil), but it was quite affecting.
3/31/02 | Don Juan | Seattle Rep | This is Moliere's version, and much less farcical than Moliere usually is. It's actually a little grim. Extremely well adapted & acted, and the sets & costumes were amazing.
4/13/02 | Tango Tonight | PNB | Mostly excellent.
4/21/02 | Washington Freedom vs. San Jose Cyberrays | Washington DC | My first professional soccer game. Neat.
5/5/02 | Arms & The Man | Intiman | Pretty amusing, and included a bunch of favorite Seattle actors.
5/12/02 | Texts for Nothing | Seattle Rep | I left feeling as if the actor (Bill Irwin) was brilliant, but that I just didn't get it.
5/17/02 | Spider-Man | Majestic Bay Theater | Fun. Dinner and jazz at the Bait House beforehand.
5/24/02 | The Royal Tenenbaums | Portland Theater Pub | Thoroughly enjoyed the flick, and the Theater Pub concept is the best.
6/2/02 | Galapagos: 3D | IMAX Theater at Smithsonian Natural History Museum | Dragged poor John & Vicky to see this, and kept poking them during the underwater scenes, saying, "It felt just like this!" They said they had fun, too, though.
6/2/02 | Shear Madness | Kennedy Center | Loosely improvised around a murder in a barbershop. Cute.
6/8/02 | Song & Dance | PNB
Repertory program including "Hail to the Conquering Hero," "Seven Deadly Sins," and "Ballad of You and Me" (set to music by Woody Guthrie!). Excellent evening. |
6/16/02 | Lackawanna Blues | Intiman | Really, really good one-man show (with music) about growing up in Lackawanna, NY.
7/21/02 | Philadelphia Museum of Art | Philadelphia, PA. | Good Impressionist section.
7/21/02 | Rodin Museum | Philadelphia, PA. | Interesting. All sculptures made from original casts, or something that makes them technically original Rodins, even if they were cast after his death.
7/28/02 | Nickel and Dimed | Intiman | A play based on Barbara Ehrenreich's book, which was very, very good.
8/16/02 | Mariners vs. Yankees | Safeco Field | We lost, but it was fun anyhow.
8/18/02 | From Corot to Picasso: Smith College Collection | Seattle Art Museum | Lots of good Impressionist stuff.
8/19/02 | The Bourne Identity | Ketchikan, Alaska | Exactly what I felt like seeing.
8/19/02 | Totem Heritage Center | Ketchikan, Alaska | Old (100+ years) poles rescued from Alaska Native villages, demonstrating the work of master carvers.
9/7/02 | UW Huskies vs. San Jose State | Husky Stadium | Abysmal first half, great second half, and finally a W. All in all, an enjoyable home opener.
9/15/02 | Scapin | Intiman | Moliere play. Very interesting--and good--adaptation. All singing, all dancing!
9/21/02 | UW Huskies vs. Wyoming | Husky Stadium | Another bad first half with a much better second half. We can't keep doing that.
10/5/02 | UW Huskies vs. Cal | Husky Stadium | An L. This bodes ill for our Pac-10 chances. At least I got to see Peet.
10/5/02 | The Merry Widow | PNB | Good season opener, even though I'm not usually enamored with full-length ballets. Unbelievably beautiful sets.
10/6/02 | Copenhagen | Seattle Rep | Very interesting play about Heisenburg and Bohr. Moving and thought-provoking. Also, set designers in Seattle are incredible.
10/11 - 10/13/02 | Make Your Own Willow Chair | Olympic Park Institute | I actually did make my own willow chair! Photos now available.
10/20/02 | Loot | Intiman | Amusing, although not my favorite play of the year. A little farcical for me. (Yet I loved the two Moliere plays this year. I'm a mystery.)
10/27/02 | When Grace Comes In | Seattle Rep | Started out worrying me, because it seemed a little boring and lengthy, then I got into it, then I felt like it kind of went on too long. Worth seeing as part of a subscription, maybe not to buy a single ticket.
11/2/02 | UW Huskies vs. UCLA | Husky Stadium | This was a pretty good game (except for the outcome). I'm a little sick of losing. It was very nice to get to see Margaret, though, so I won't complain. Much.
11/8/02 | World Premiere! | PNB | Four ballets, three of which were plotless (inspired by the music entirely), the other of which was sort of an homage to "Othello" without being a complete retelling. All were excellent, although I kind of hated the music on one of the ones inspired by the music.
11/9/02 | UW Huskies vs. Oregon State | Husky Stadium | Finally, a W! Good game, too.
11/17/02 | International Spy Museum | Washington DC | A hoot. The lines were long, even in the cold and rain, but it was fun anyhow.
11/23/02 | The Tempest | Seattle Shakespeare Company | Not bad. Prospero was excellent, but I wasn't crazy about some of the Director's choices.
11/30/02 | Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets | Mountlake 9 | Great!
12/1/02 | Light Up the Sky | Seattle Rep | Good period comedy by Moss Hart, with some great actors.
12/14/02 | Luminaria ("Pathway of Lights") | Greenlake | Quite possibly the fewest lights we've ever seen, even given the deluge of 1995 (or whenever we first did this). Only 33 of the luminaria were lit (although I lit a few more...). Pretty anyhow, and it wasn't actually raining while we walked...much.
12/15/02 | Sugar Plum Fairy | Seattle Rep | Sandra Tsing Loh on Christmas. Funny!
12/22/02 | Adaptation | Pacific Place
Bob: Well, what did you think? |
12/25/02 | Gangs of New York | Mountlake 9 | LoTR was sold out, so saw this uplifting Christmas movie instead. It is really good, but absolutely brutal.
